Huffman, last on Broadway opposite Nathan Lane in The Nance, will step into the role of Matron “Mama” Morton.
The actor won her Tony for her performance as Ulla in The Producers opposite Lane and Matthew Broderick. Her Broadway credits also include a Tony-nominated performance as Ziegfeld’s Favorite in The Will Rogers Follies, the original production of La Cage aux Folles, Steel Pier, Dame Edna: The Royal Tour, and Bob Fosse’s last original musical, Big Deal.
Chicago currently stars Bianca Marroquín as Roxie Hart (Charlotte d’Amboise returns to the role April 23), Amra-Faye Wright as Velma Kelly, Chaz Lamar Shepherd as Billy Flynn, Evan Harrington as Amos Hart, singer-songwriter Valerie Simpson as Matron “Mama” Morton (through April 22), and R. Lowe as Mary Sunshine.
With a book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, music by John Kander, and lyrics by Fred Ebb, Chicago is produced by Barry and Fran Weissler. The Walter Bobbie-helmed revival, choreographed by Ann Reinking, is the winner of six 1997 Tony Awards, including Best Musical Revival, and the Grammy Award for Best Musical Cast Recording.
