Dreamgirls will play the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts at Theatre Under the Stars in Houston, Texas, April 4–16, as part of the company's 2016-17 season.
Sheldon Epps, TUTS artistic advisor, will direct the production. Epps began his career as an actor after graduating from Carnegie Mellon University. He later co-founded The Production Company, for which he began directing plays. Epps made his Off-Broadway directorial debut with Blues in the Night, a musical revue on which he collaborated with Gregory Hines. He also directed its later transfer to Broadway. Epps also directed Scenes and Revelations, Play On!, and Baby It’s You! on the Main Stem.
“I am very pleased to direct what has always been one of my favorite musicals,” said Epps in a press release. “This brilliant work is full of theatrical vitality, musical vibrancy, Motown inspired soul, and (in the most entertaining ways) themes about the nature of art and authenticity.”
Dreamgirls recently celebrated its 35th anniversary, having opened at Broadway’s Imperial Theatre December 20, 1981. A London production starring Glee’s Amber Riley is currently running at the Savoy Theatre.
Abdul Hamid Royal will provide musical direction, with choreography by Jeffrey Polk, scenic design by Kevin Depinet, lighting design by Jack Jacobs, costume design by Colleen Grady, hair and makeup design by Jeff Knaggs, and sound design by Andrew Harper.
Auditions for the production begin in Houston January 27–28, followed by auditions in Los Angeles (February 5–7) and New York City (February 14–16). Stewart/Whitley is the official casting agency for TUTS and this production.
