The Hollywood Bowl, the famed outdoor venue in California, will offer several evenings of interest to theatre fans this summer.
Leslie Odom, Jr., who won a Tony for his performance as Aaron Burr in the hit musical Hamilton, will be part of Jazz at the Bowl, which will be presented July 19. The evening, featuring the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, conducted by Vince Mendoza, will also include the talents of Andra Day, Lizz Wright, Regina Carter, and the Dizzy Gillespie All-star Big Band (Jon Faddis, conductor/trumpet). Special guests include Charles McPherson, Lewis Nash, and Peter Washington. The 8 PM event is described as such: “An all-star Gillespie big band tears it up with Dizzy’s original charts, followed by today’s vocal stars and musicians performing classics from Ella’s songbook years with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra."
An all-star cast to be announced will be seen in Sondheim on Sondheim July 23 at 7:30 PM. Conceived and directed by James Lapine, the evening of Stephen Sondheim tunes will feature the Los Angeles Philharmonic, conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, as well as the Youth Orchestra Los Angeles. Seen on Broadway in 2010, the musical journey through the life and career of Sondheim features tunes from Follies, Into the Woods, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Passion, and more.
This season's musical will be the international hit Mamma Mia!, which will play the Hollywood venue July 28-29 at 8 PM and July 30 at 7:30 PM. Multiple Tony winner Kathleen Marshall will direct and choreograph the weekend of performances. A star-studded cast will be announced at a later time. Celebrating the songs of ABBA, Mamma Mia! features the music and lyrics of Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus (and some songs with Stig Anderson) with a book by Catherine Johnson.
